levels of Teaching

Most teachers have never been taught the different levels of teaching. This article gives us a brief overview of each level and how they are used in the classroom with young students. The different levels of teaching is an idea that was developed over a century ago.

The Teaching profession is a demanding and difficult profession that requires much dedication and perseverance. There are many different levels of teaching methods, ages taught, subject matters to be taught, and range of education levels in which to teach.

Every level has different characteristics and is specific for different class ages and the content being taught. Teachers can teach in all schools and educational settings. Basically, there are six Levels of Teaching such as

​1. Preschool Teachers/Child Care Workers

In the United States, preschool teachers are required to hold a minimum of an Associate’s Degree. Like teaching in the school classroom, Child Care workers must work alongside children and Teachers.

Child Care workers must be able to understand each child’s personality and temperament. In addition, they must be able to care for the children in an appropriate way. In this level of teaching, teachers special training for care the children and also teach the children.

​2. Elementary School Teachers (K-6)

Teachers require a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree to obtain that special teacher certification. Teachers in this level of education teach mainly on a daily basis. They teach different subjects such as English, Science, and Math.

Teachers at this level are expected to know how to handle the children in their classroom and understand each individual regardless of their personality traits. Teachers’ ability to guide and control the classroom, and teach the children in a way that makes them understand and learn is another essential element in this level of education.

​3. Secondary School Teachers (Middle School/Jr. High School/High School

Teachers require a minimum of a Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree plus special training in the form of an endorsement. This level of education includes all types of subject matters such as mathematics, technology, Bio, Physics, language arts, and the arts. Teachers usually teach at higher educational levels such as high school, and secondary school.

​4. Special Education Teacher (K-12)

Special education teachers must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Teachers in this situation are required to have special training such as Special Education and learning. Teachers in this level of education are required to teach with the student’s needs in mind. The teacher’s main job is to follow the students’ wishes, and support and guide the students. Teachers often work with the district office, teachers, and parents to meet the needs of their special needs.

5. College/University Faculty (Post-Secondary/Higher Education)

College/University faculty must have an M.phil Degree. Faculty in this category teach students who are in their freshman year and above. These teachers are specialized, specialized and are expected to know how to help the students to learn successfully in an academically efficient way. Here need more experienced teachers to guide younger students in their academic careers.

​6. Counselors (School Counseling/College Counseling)

Counselors must have an M.phil Degree in Counseling. Counselors are essential to students’ success and well-being. Counselors are the first people students go to when they feel they need help. Counselors must be knowledgeable about the student’s needs in order to effectively counsel the students. The teacher is often considered the most influential classroom member. They are responsible for every decision or action that happens in the classroom.

7. Adult Education

Adult Education teachers must have a Ph.D. Degree. These teachers work with adults who are looking to improve their skills and knowledge. The adult education teacher’s main goal is to help adults get the training and education they need to become successful in life or in the workplace.

Educators need to consider the developmental stage of the students when planning lessons. These three levels are

  • Memory level: Thoughtless teaching
  • Understanding level: Thoughtful teaching
  • Reflective level: Upper thoughtful level

1. Memory level of Teaching

It’s the level of teaching where we only teach what is necessary and want the student to learn. In this level of teaching, instructors make the learning objective clear and simple. They give lots of examples, practice exercises, role plays and more class activities to help students remember their lesson easily such as

  • The capacity for thought plays no role.
  • Students only memorize the laws, facts, and formulas that have been taught to them.
  • The only thing being given is memorization of the material. [Morris L. Bigge (1967)]
  • The student’s part is secondary to the teacher’s importance.
  • The study materials are prepared and organized.
  • The instruction material is delivered by the teacher in a sequential manner.

Advantages of Memory Level

  • It benefits younger students.
  • suitable for slow learners.
  • Useful for kids to learn a new concept.
  • The foundation for understanding teaching at the reflective level.

Disadvantages of Memory Level

  • Not advantageous to the upper classes.
  • Teacher dropout Loss of memory and retention.
  • The classroom has little interaction.
  • The difficulty of managing a classroom.
  • Students lack the opportunity for self-learning.

2. Understanding the Level of Teaching

Teaching on the understanding level involves for students to think about new and comparing them with what they already know. The focus is on teaching facts, concepts, principles, and skills. The teacher expects the student’s part to be as important as their own.

  • seeing the total use of facts
  • seeing the relationship
  • as a generalized insight

The quality of instruction at the understanding level is higher than that at the memory level. From the perspective of mental capabilities, it is more beneficial and considerate. At this level of instruction, the teacher explains to the students the connection between principles and facts and shows them many applications for these concepts. For this level of instruction, the memory level teaching barrier must be overcome.

Teaching at the comprehension level has greater merit than teaching at the memory level. This makes it possible for students to fully understand the subject matter. The teacher’s role is more active at the understanding level. The kids are among the best at this level.

Advantages of Understanding Level

Effective education

Disadvantages of Understanding Level

Ignore higher levels of intelligence.
diminished importance of intrinsic motivation.
No individualized instruction; teacher-focused.

3. Reflective Level of Teaching

Teaching at the reflective level emphasizes developing intelligence. The teacher’s role is to help the students understand abstract concepts, ideas, and principles. The reflection of the teaching and learning process becomes more important than that of the memory and understanding levels.

  • It is quite well-thought-out and usable.
  • Only after passing through the levels of memory and understanding can a student reach this level.
  • The ability to learn at a reflective level helps students tackle real-world issues.
  • The student is forced to deal with a genuine crisis situation at this level. By understanding the situation and applying his critical thinking skills, the student is successful in finding a solution.
  • At this stage, attention is placed on locating the issue, describing it, and solving it. At this stage, the student starts to show original thought and creative ability.
  • At this level of instruction, the teacher’s role is democratic. He encourages the student’s gifts and abilities rather than pressuring them to learn.

Primary Teaching Goals at the Reflective Level

  • to encourage students to think critically and creatively.
  • to build the student’s capacity for independent judgment and decision-making.
  • to help students become more adept at addressing problems.

Reflective Level Benefits 

  • an efficient method of operating.
  • Learner-centered.
  • improvement of problem-solving capabilities.
  • greatest flexibility.
  • Increasing creativity.
  • Self-motivation.

Reflective level drawbacks include

  • Inappropriate for lower grades.
  • lengthy procedure.
  • Unsuitable for an Indian classroom.
  • Not appropriate for boring students.
  • the difficulty instructors face.

Conclusions

My aim in this article is to suggest how teachers could integrate mindfulness into their everyday lives. The idea is to be mindful of what is happening in the classroom and how this in turn can enhance the learning taking place. The aim is that levels of teaching.
